Raleigh, NC – Larry Wilson of Raleigh was recently inducted into the North Carolina Cooperative Hall of Fame by the Cooperative Council of NC. Nominated by Coastal Federal Credit Union for this honor, Wilson was inducted at the Cooperative Council's Annual Meeting in Charlotte in late April, making him the third inductee to this new recognition.
Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor that the cooperative community bestows on individuals who have made significant contributions to cooperatives in the state. Criteria for selection includes demonstrating innovation, personal commitment, leadership and vision to the advancement of cooperatives; achieving lasting changes to improve and promote cooperatives; commitment to cooperatives through years of service; and individual contributions to the community.
Wilson retired in 2013 after serving for 38 years as CEO of Coastal Federal Credit Union. When he started, the credit union had 3 employees and 3,900 members. Under his leadership, Coastal has grown to have over 400 employees and more than 190,000 members. Wilson's tenure was marked by steady growth and prosperity, even in the effects of a down economy in 2008 and 2009. The credit union emerged through the downturn stronger than ever after strategic changes with Wilson at the helm. Wilson's success can also be attributed to his commitment toward serving members and listening to their needs. He promotes innovation to better serve cooperative members and encourages projects that bring cooperatives together for the good of the industry and community.
Credit union leaders across the state and country know of Larry Wilson and have been positively impacted by his leadership. A few of the many boards and committees on which Wilson has served include National Association of Federal Credit Unions, Credit Union Direct Corporation, and the Fannie Mae National Housing Advisory Council. Wilson also served 28 years on the NC Credit Union League's board, and served 22 years on the board of CUNA Mutual Group. He currently serves as a member of the board for the Cooperative Council of NC.
A graduate of North Carolina State University, Wilson has remained committed to his home state and local community. One of the seven cooperative principles focuses on "concern for the community" and Wilson has always strived to do just that, not only in his career, but in his personal life. He has been active in the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, and served on the boards of the Triangle Chapters of the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Wilson and his wife, Judy, live in Raleigh where he is enjoying retirement. Larry is one of the most humble, knowledgeable, hard-working people. He is well-deserving of all honors he receives.
The Cooperative Council of North Carolina is a non-profit trade association for cooperatives. Headquartered in Raleigh, the Council strives to promote, educate and connect all cooperatives in our great state.
